October 26, 2011

The Census Bureau has released its list of covered counties and jurisdictions that will be required to provide bilingual ballots for the upcoming 2012 election.

The list includes 248 counties in 25 different states.  Three of those states—California, Texas, and Florida—will be required to provide a statewide bilingual ballot.

In 1975, Congress greatly expanded the Voting Rights Act of 1965’s original intent by inserting special protections for “language minorities”—1) American Indians, 2) Asian Americans, 3) Alaskan Natives, and 4) citizen of Spanish Heritage.  Although the bilingual ballot provisions were originally intended to be temporary remedies, Congress has continued to renew them.

Congress should REPEAL bilingual ballots because there is no justification for requiring taxpayers in these covered jurisdictions to pay for foreign-language election materials when only U.S. citizens can vote and naturalized immigrants must pass an English exam before they become citizens!
