Last year, you may recall that the small town of Jackson, New York passed a common sense ordinance simply stating that all town business must be conducted in English.

One month after the measure passed, the NYCLU (New York Civil Liberties Union) sent the town a letter threatening legal action, by making false claims that the ordinance was unconstitutional because it “limits free speech.”

The NYCLU then tapped NY Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to pressure the town (population 1,718) into surrendering their English ordinance. The AG and his bureaucrats are now threatening to take legal action against Jackson, NY if the town doesn’t rescind its English ordinance by June 1st!

The town of Jackson has been conducting its government business in English for nearly 200 years.  A 2010 Rasmussen poll found that over 87% of likely voters nationwide—including Democrats, Republicans, and Independents—support making English the official language.  Jackson is following in the footsteps of Hazelton, PA, a city that beat back the ACLU lawyer and preserved its official English-in-government ordinance in 2006.  Hazelton’s former mayor, now U.S. Representative Lou Barletta, who was responsible for the English law was even elected to the U.S. Congress in November 2010!

The Attorney General of New York is wrong that Jackson is discriminating against immigrants. The ordinance does nothing to inhibit Jackson’s residents from speaking any language they desire. It simply requires the local government to operate and communicate in English.
