UPDATE

LAST CHANCE to salvage English provisions in SB 590!
The Indiana House stripped SB 590 of its official English provisions. Tell the Senate to restore the English provisions when they vote tonight!

April 29, 201

The Indiana Legislature has been debating SB 590 all session long, but today is the very last day of the 2011 session, and a final version of the bill has yet to be passed.  The Indiana Senate must restore the English provisions and take a final vote before midnight tonight, so there is still time left to light up your state Senator’s phone lines!

Back in February, the Indiana state Senate passed SB 590, which contained English language provisions that simply provided implementation rules to enforce the 27-year-old official English law of Indiana. But later, the Indiana House voted to strip the English provisions from the bill!

Please call your state senator NOW and urge him to vote to restore
the English provisions to SB 590 before it’s too late!

The English provisions, if restored, will require that only English be used—with certain exceptions such as in cases of public safety, health, teaching foreign languages, etc.—in public meetings, public documents, by officers and employees of the state or political subdivisions in performing their duties, and providing information communicated electronically by the state or a political subdivision.

In the News…

Lead-sponsor Senator Mike Delph, April 27, 2011, on SB 590:

"I think we've got to promote the use of the English language.  I don't think we should be offended as a state or a country to promote that language.  It's the language that binds and ties us all as one people, and as one state and one country."
