Thank you for your thousands of calls and emails into the Texas State House last week in support of HB 176!

Last Wednesday, the House Committee on State Affairs heard testimony on the issue of making English the official language of the state of Texas.

According to committee rules, all bills under consideration are left pending in committee until a committee vote is scheduled, which typically occurs anywhere from one week or more after the testimony is presented.  So, the State Affairs Committee could schedule a vote on HB 176 at any time!

The Texas legislative session lasts no more than 140 days total, ending during the last week of May or the first week of June, so the clock is ticking!

Introduced by Rep. Jim Jackson (R-115th-Dallas), HB 176 would simply make English the default language of government operations and communications.  If HB 176 passes and is signed into law, Texas will become the 32nd state to adopt official English.

Remember, official English does not mean “English only.” Making English the official language of Texas means that for the Texas state government to act officially, it must communicate in English.  It means that the language of record is the English language, and that no one has a right to demand government services in any other language.

Please keep your calls, emails, and letters flowing into your state rep.’s office so they know that their constituents support making Texas the 32nd official English state!
