Yesterday, the Arkansas House Public Transportation Committee approved and sent HB 2007 to the House floor.

HB 2007, introduced by Rep. Jon Hubbard of Jonesboro, would require that the written portion of state driver's license exams must be administered in no languages other than English.

In 1987, Arkansas made English its official language, yet, the state continues to give driver's license exams in 2 languages—English and Spanish.

Passing and signing HB 2007 into law will simply close a dangerous loophole in Arkansas' official English law.

TAKE ACTION!

Limiting driver's license tests to the English language is consistent with regulations of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which operates under the umbrella of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The FMCSA requires drivers engaged in interstate commerce to be able to:

  • Read or speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public.
  • Understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language.
  • Respond to official inquiries and to make entries on reports and records.

What is required of truck drivers to protect public safety in interstate commerce should be required to protect the safety of all Arkansas motorists as well!

TAKE ACTION!

Call and email your state rep. and urge him to VOTE YES on HB 2007 on the House floor!
