Thanks to your generous donations, ProEnglish was successful in helping Oklahoma become the 31st state to adopt English as its official language last month!

Voters spoke decisively on November 2nd on a ballot measure in Oklahoma to enact English as the official language of their state government.  State Question 751, which effectively amended the Oklahoma state constitution to make English the official language, easily passed with 76% of the vote.

In a recent thank you letter, Oklahoma State Representative Randy Terrill (District 53) praised the work of ProEnglish in getting the official English ballot bill through the state legislature and onto the November ballot:

“I want to thank you for all the work ProEnglish and its members did to help pass our official English bill.  Thanks to ProEnglish, Oklahoma voters had the chance to vote in a referendum that made Oklahoma the 31st official English state.”

“I can’t tell you how important it was to have ProEnglish and its legal team available whenever I needed help throughout our legislative session.”

“Your legal expertise was critical in drafting a meaningful bill that can stand up to court challenges.  And your radio ads, mailings to ProEnglish members, and phone bank calls to the constituents of wavering legislators all played a major role in our victory.”

Despite the overwhelming support for the English amendment, an Oklahoma lawyer filed a lawsuit alleging that the official English constitutional amendment is “unconstitutional.”  Yep, you heard that right!  The party bringing the suit is attempting to make the case that the amendment is “unconstitutional” because it limits non-English speakers’ right to free speech.

ProEnglish plans to fight any and all challenges to the Oklahoma English law. By donating just $10 today, you can help us fight this challenge if the lawsuit proceeds to trial and continue in our quest to pass official English in states, cities, and towns all across America!

ProEnglish has also been working hard during this Lame Duck session of Congress to oppose the proposed DREAM Act amnesty bill.  If passed and signed into law, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act would legalize approximately 2.1 million illegal aliens under the age of 30 or 35, without first requiring them to learn English.  ProEnglish believes that removing incentives for immigrants and native-born non-English speakers to learn English is bad public policy.  Rather than increasing taxpayer-funding for costly government-mandated multilingual services, Congress should instead be directing funds to programs to teach English, not supporting policies that increase the demand for programs that discourage assimilation.

Over the past few weeks, we have been sending action alerts to drive in thousands of phone calls to Congress.  We even ran a 24-hour ad on the popular and widely visited Drudge Report website the day before the Senate vote, which thankfully failed and further prevented the DREAM Act from moving to the President’s desk.  A small donation will help us run more ads and generate even more phone calls when this legislation comes up again before the end of the Lame Duck!

ProEnglish receives no government support.  It relies solely on the generosity of patriotic Americans like you for its funding. If possible, I ask that you pledge a small donation today so ProEnglish can wage a legal and public relations campaign in defense of our common language.

With your help, ProEnglish will have the resources it needs to advance several English bills in Congress in 2011.  The 112th freshman class of Congressmen and Senators will include a substantial number of strong official English advocates, including Sens. Roy Blunt (MO), Marco Rubio (FL), and Rand Paul (KY), as well as Reps. Jeff Landry (LA), Allen West (FL), Mo Brooks (AL), Tim Walberg (MI), Lou Barletta (PA), Scott DesJarlais (TN), Steve Womack (AR), Bobby Schilling (IL), Bob Gibbs (OH), and Tom Marino (PA).

One of our top priorities for the 112th Congress will be to pass Congressman Steve King’s (R-IA) English Language Unity Act, which would require all official functions of the United States to be conducted in English, require the establishment of a uniform language requirement for naturalization, and set the framework for uniform testing of English language ability for candidates for naturalization.

Congressman Steve King has praised ProEnglish’s work on these important English issues:

“ProEnglish understands the importance of having English as our official language and they have worked tirelessly to defend America’s common language. Over the years, ProEnglish has helped provide invaluable resources through their educational materials.”

Having higher numbers of pro-English congressmen, like Steve King,  increases the likelihood of getting good English legislation to the House floor next year, and it decreases the risk of harmful multilingual mandates slipping through the House and Senate.  Gaining larger margins of official English supporters in several state legislatures and Governors’ Mansions increases the chances of passing driver’s license bills (to require all driver’s license tests be given in no language other than English) in AL, GA, TN, MI, IA, ID, and MO.  States like PA, TX, MI, OH, and NV could now more realistically become official English states.

We rarely ask, but please consider pledging a $10 or $25 gift to ProEnglish today.

So much more needs to be done to make English our official language and to defeat the forces that seek to undermine our national unity.

A gift of just $10 will help us significantly in preparing for the battles in the coming session of the new Congress and in the state legislatures.   Of course, larger gifts are welcome, and every gift to ProEnglish is tax-deductible.  Time is also running out to make one last tax-free contribution for 2010!

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Jayne Cannava
