Rep. Steve King (IA) receives Theodore Roosevelt American Unity Award
ARLINGTON, VA – “We are very pleased to award the Theodore Roosevelt American Unity award for the 110th Congress to Representative Steve King of Iowa,” ProEnglish Executive Director K.C. McAlpin announced today at a brief presentation ceremony on Capitol Hill. The award is given biennially to recognize the legislator in every Congress whose leadership in working to preserve and protect the nation’s linguistic unity in the English language best exemplifies U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt’s commitment to American national unity. The recipient is chosen by ProEnglish’s national board of directors. “Since he was first elected to Congress in 2002, Representative Steve King has dedicated himself to the cause of defending America’s melting pot by introducing and working hard to build support for legislation to make English the official language,” said McAlpin. “His signature bill, H.R. 997, “The English Language Unity Act,” has attracted the bipartisan support of 152 of his colleagues in the House of Representatives, more than one third of the entire House. Despite this enormous level of support and polls that consistently show an overwhelming majority of 83 to 87 percent of the American people – including solid majorities of minority voters – want to make English our official English, the House leadership has refused to take up his bill,” McAlpin said. “Even before he was elected to Congress, Rep. King was responsible for persuading his home state of Iowa to enact official English legislation when he served in the Iowa State Senate,” McAlpin added. “Besides his outstanding leadership on official English, Congressman King has worked as hard as anyone on Capitol Hill to defend the vital role the English language plays in bringing Americans from diverse backgrounds into one national community.” “The board of ProEnglish could not have selected a more deserving recipient for the 110th Congress,” McAlpin said. The only previous Theodore Roosevelt American Unity award was given to Oklahoma Senator James N. Inhofe for the 109th Congress in recognition of his success in passing an official English amendment in the Senate. ###
