For immediate release Contact: Phil Kent ProEnglish hails translation cost transparency bill by Rep. Virginia Foxx ARLINGTON, VA – “Citizens have a fundamental right to know how much of their money is being spent to provide translations and interpreters for people who refuse to learn English,” says K.C. McAlpin, the executive director of ProEnglish, an Arlington-based organization that advocates for making English the official language of government operations. “That is why we strongly commend U.S. Representative Virginia Foxx (NC-5) for her leadership in introducing H.R. 1414, the Multilingual Services Accounting Act yesterday. We urge House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic Congressional Leadership to take up and pass this good government legislation that will help fulfill their promise to promote greater transparency in government,” McAlpin added. “While no one, including ourselves will dispute that there many instances in which it is not only desirable, but essential for our government to provide interpreters or translations, there are also many instances in which government bureaucrats are simply making decisions to spend taxpayer money for the convenience of those who do not speak English,” he continued. “There is no excuse for that,” McAlpin said, “especially during these times of falling tax revenues and skyrocketing government deficits. Rep. Foxx’s bill is urgently needed to give citizens the information they need about how their money is being spent,” he added. |
