For Immediate Release Contact: Phil Kent ProEnglish praises Rep. Price for hisCommon Sense English ActARLINGTON, Va.—“Rep. Tom Price of Georgia deserves high praise for his leadership in working to preserve our nation’s historic unity in the English language by introducing the Common Sense English Act, H.R. 4464, to protect employers like the Salvation Army that expect their workers to use English at work.” says K.C. McAlpin, executive director of ProEnglish, a group that advocates for official English. H.R. 4464 already has attracted over one hundred bi-partisan co-sponsors even though it was just introduced in December. “Employers should be able to have English-on-the-job rules without fear of being bullied by the language police at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC),” said McAlpin. “Such polices give immigrants added incentives to learn English and assimilate which benefits them and strengthens our nation.” McAlpin added. Among many reasons employers have for implementing such polices are maintaining employee morale, protecting worker’s safety, fostering a spirit of teamwork, and guarding against sexual harassment and other forms of employee harassment. “Even though courts have ruled that English-on-the-job rules do not constitute a prohibited form of discrimination, the EEOC continues to abuse its authority to prosecute employers that have such policies,” McAlpin continued. “It is time for Congress to act.” A 2007 Rasmussen poll found 77 percent of American voters believe employers should have the right to require the use of English in the workplace. |
