ProEnglish Denounces Oklahoma Supreme
Court Ruling Barring Official English Petition Campaign
(Arlington, VA) The head of ProEnglish, a national organization that advocates making English the official (non-exclusive) language of government issued a statement today denouncing the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s ruling announced yesterday blocking a citizen’s petition campaign to make English the official language there. "This court ruling is a naked attack on democratic rule," said ProEnglish Executive Director K.C. McAlpin. "Its purpose is to prevent the people of Oklahoma from deciding for themselves if they want to follow in the footsteps of twenty-seven other states and make English the official language of their state," he added. "It is astounding that the court would justify its assault on democracy by claiming the citizens initiative infringes on the right of free speech and the right of the people to petition their government," McAlpin observed. "It is the court, not Oklahoma citizens for official English, that is infringing the right of free speech, the right to petition the government, and the people’s right to self-rule. Mr. McAlpin is available for interviews on official English and related issues. Call (703) 816-8821. |
