ProEnglish Urges High
Court to Uphold Alabama Official English Law
ProEnglish
News Release
Jan. 16, 2001
(Washington, D.C.) The head of ProEnglish, the nation's leading defender
of official English laws in court, urged the Supreme Court to uphold
Alabama's official English law in the case of Alexander
v. Sandoval [no. 99-1908]
which was heard by the high court today.
ProEnglish executive director K.C. McAlpin said, "By creating a new
right to government services in any language demanded, the lower court
decision in Sandoval
threatens to unleash the kind of chaos and conflict over language that,
until now, the United States has been fortunate to avoid." He
added, "It is exactly the kind of disaster the citizens of Alabama meant
to prevent when they voted 9-1 for a law making English their official
language."
ProEnglish was joined by two other organizations and fourteen members
of Congress in a friend-of-the court brief supporting Alabama's appeal
before the Supreme Court.
Background information about this case including a copy of the brief
and information about ProEnglish can be accessed over the Internet at:
