Official English laws pending in Congress
Representative Peter King (R-NY) and Senator
James Inhofe (R-OK) have introduced the National
Language Act, which is HR 769 in the House and S. 1335 in the Senate.
Representative Steve King of Iowa and more
than 100 other congressmen are sponsoring H.R. 997,
the English Unity Act. Rep. Tom
Tancredo's H.J.
Res 19 proposes an official-English amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Rep.
Peter King's H.R. 768 would rescind Executive
Order 13166, the federal mandate to provide services in hundreds of
foreign languages.
ProEnglish opposes H.R.
900, a contrived effort to pressure Puerto Rico into accepting statehood,
and H.R.
1645, the Gutierrez-Flake immigration plan, which fails to provide
adequate incentives for immigrants to learn English.
Official English laws pending in the states
Connecticut: Statute and Constitutional
amendments are pending House committee actions.
Georgia: Due to the failure of committees in both the House and Senate
to report the official language bill out of committee before the legislature
has adjourned for the session, no action is likely this year. However,
the bill is still active for consideration in 2008.
Idaho: As of March 30th, Idaho has now become
the 29th state to make English its official langauge.
Indiana: Statute pending House committee actions. Strengthens existing
Official English laws.
Kansas: Kansas has now become the 30th state
to make English its official language
Kentucky: Statute strengthens existing Official English laws; Pending
House committee actions
Maryland: A hearing has been had on statute, a Senate hearing is scheduled.
Votes are still pending
Michigan: Statute is pending in House committee.
Mississippi: Statute has died in committee.
Missouri: The Missouri legislature has approved
a ballot initiative for a constitutional amendment, to be voted on in
2008.
Minnesota: Statute is pending committee action in both houses.
Nevada: A bill,
which passed the Nevada Senate by a vote of 19-2, died after the House
failed to take action.
New Jersey: Statute is pending committee
action in both houses.
Oklahoma: Statute has passed out of House committee and been introduced
in Senate, pending floor votes. A separate Amendment is pending committee
action
Oregon: Two statutes are pending committee action.
Rhode Island: A bill in the Rhode
Island Assembly includes a clause requiring English for official publications
of agencies and department of Rhode Island.
Texas: Statute is pending committee action
in house.
Washington: Amendment is pending committee action in house
West Virginia: Statute is pending committee action in both houses.
Wisconsin: Rep. Martin Schneider
(D-Wisconsin Rapids) has introduced legislation,
Wyoming: Statute strengthening existing Official English laws has reportedly
been introduced.
